_____________________________________ The Death of Scienceby Lion Larry Leguire Scientific Advisor, Ohio Lions Eye Research Foundation
Have you pondered life without science? I have. Have you ever decided not to do an important study on childhood eye disease because of red tape? I have. Have you ever given-up on a field of research because an animal review board wanted you to anesthetize a lizard before you chopped his head off with a guillotine? I have. Have you ever terminated an important study because you could not accept the Institutional Review Board’s conditions for doing a study? I have. Have you written grant proposals over and over for 10 years for a three-year grant for one study? I have Have you seen a human consent form grow from a ½ page, 20 years ago, to more than a dozen today? I have. Have you spent nine months of paperwork to do a one-week study? I have.
Have you pondered life without science? I have. Have you thought about the enormous amount of hours, wasted, because of a new burden on researchers called "Clinical Trials" registration? I have. Have you seen important science delayed, equipment destroyed and lab animals released into the environment by antiscience animal extremists? I have. Have you seen a promising medical doctor leave an area of science because of the burden of trying to get animal study approval to use rats? I have. Have you seen science distorted by creationists who would rather deceive than believe in science? I have.
Have you pondered life without science? I have. Have you seen more and more people chose "alternative medicine" without any scientific support? I have. Have you seen the FDA delay an important drug not because of science but because of politics? I have. Have you seen science stifled when it conflicts with the politics of special interest groups? I have. Have you seen the federal government refuse to support important research on recreational drugs taken by 1 in 4 youths? I have. Have you seen the federal government promote programs contrary to scientific findings? I have. Have you seen school boards approve lesson plans that distort science to indoctrinate children into ignorance? I have.
The death of science? No, but I can see the pallbearers from here. Help science and support the Ohio LIONS Eye Research Foundation (www.OhioLionsEyeResearch.com).
