Each year, LIONS members throughout Ohio undertake fund raising activities for eye research. Individual clubs raise money by a number of fund raisers including collecting from the general public during Sight Conservation Day (White Cane Sale Day), in which LIONS members stand at store fronts and ask for donations. LIONS members also undertake fruit sales, pancake sales, candy sales and various types of raffles. In addition, LIONS members and laypeople interested in the work of the LIONS contribute directly to the Ohio LIONS Eye Research Foundation, either by check or by including a bequeath in their will.
Rea and Associates have reported that only about 7% of foundation funds are used for so-called overhead costs (awards, supplies, symposium costs, etc.) such that about 93% of funds actually go to the purposes of the foundation i.e., eye research. Compare the foundation’s 7% overhead costs to the 20 – 30% or more overhead costs associated with the typical nonprofit organization! Why such low overhead costs? Because we are a volunteer organization and no LIONS member associated with the Ohio LIONS Eye Research Foundation gets paid! We exemplify what LIONISM is all about – helping others (and not ourselves). Put your hard earned money to good use at the Ohio LIONS Eye Research Foundation, prevent blindness and contribute to a meaningful cause!
