AREDS2 Study

NOTE: Patient enrollment has been completed...It will be several years before results are in so stay tuned to this website for more information

Important:  This is a real, NIH supported clinical trial that will define care for AMD patients for the next decade.  This is a nutritional study about taking by mouth nutritional supplements.

The supplements are "macular xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin) and/or long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid) [DHA] and eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] )...and  to assess whether forms of the AREDS nutritional supplement with reduced zinc and/or no beta-carotene work as well as the original supplement in reducing the risk of progression to advanced AMD..."

Visit the web site for the AREDS2 study for more information:

We are providing this information as a public service to the ones we, as LIONS members, support, both in terms of services (e.g., pilot dogs, LIONS eye bank, Central Ohio Reading Service for the Blind) and research dollars.  The Lion Web Master (Lion Larry) just sent this info to PDG Lion Dick N...........  Good Luck in Lionism.

"The Age-Related Eye Disease Study II (AREDS2) is a multi-center, randomized trial designed to assess the effects of oral supplementation of macular xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin) and/or long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid) [DHA] and eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] ) on the progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD).  An additional goal of the study is to assess whether forms of the AREDS nutritional supplement with reduced zinc and/or no beta-carotene works as well as the original supplement in reducing the risk of progression to advanced AMD." - from http://www.areds2.org/
